FROZEN FIRE flashed home late on under Seamie Heffernan to give Aidan O'Brien a sixth win in an eventful running of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.
The Montjeu colt was sent off a 16-1 chance after finishing just 11th behind New Approach at Epsom 22 days ago, and he looked like posting another also ran effort before his more fancied stablemate Alessandro Volta started to run around when hitting the front. In the process he hampered favourite Tartan Bearer and Curtain Call when the pair looked destined to fight out the finish.
Casual Conquest, third at Epsom, finished one place better at 4-1 for Dermot Weld and Pat Smullen, with Alessandro Volta eventually finishing third although his place could now be under threat in a stewards inquiry.
O'Brien was equalling the record of his Ballydoyle predecessor Vincet O'Brien, in winning the race for the sixth time, and became the first man to win the race three years on the bounce following wins with Solider Of Fortune 12 months ago, and Dylan Thomas the year before.
Frozen Fire was providing Heffernan with a second Classic success this season, following his victory on board Halfway To Heaven in the Irish 1,000 Guineas.
